Activity 3: Trend influencing education in New Zealand or internationally
It feels like we are still recovering and coming to terms from the previous major disaster, whether it be an earthquake, or cyclone, and this happens in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Massive down pour of rain and major flooding later.
The affects of climate and weather change has a huge influence and impact on everyone, education, economy, population shift, welfare, work force and just another contributor the trends that we are faced with in the world today.
We can't change the weather or mother nature but we can change the way we live, protect ourselves against the elements and support each other. A disaster just waiting to happen, the wall along the bank, just could not take the down pour of the rain and the force of the river.

One trend that is influencing and shaping NZ or international education that you find most relevant to your practice. Then, critique and evaluate practice in the context of different audiences (local, national and/or international) and their perspectives.
The trend that I think is most influencing the education which is relevant to my practice is the climate and environmental changes. Not just locally, nationally but also internationally. The impact and aspects these have influenced what is happening in our community. It is affecting the economy and the way people have had to adjust to a shift in circumstances, employment and moving into town or cities.
For example the recent very heavy rain just before Easter this year 2017, caused devasting floodings and large amount of damage to the Eastern Bay Region in the Bay of Plenty.
It caused disruption amongest the people and neighbouring communities. Schools had to close down due to health risks and water shortages etc. The children's education was affected and where I work, it caused many families to stop attending and affected every ones morale, routines and quality of education and life.
Some families lost everything!
Our supported playgroup where I work is part at Eastbay REAP, which is Rural Education Activities Programme. We were able to in a positive way set up a temporary playgroup, holiday programme, for those families, affected by the flood, mainly from Edgecombe, at the local War Memorial Hall Whakatane.
Therefore it caused a social shift of these families and those affected to safer areas, better life and work prospects. According to climate change will cause "demographic shifts will stress labor, welfare and social stability. (Global Trends Paradox of Progress . page 6)
The affects of climate change is a trend which is happening nationally, internationally and globally. According to article from Global Trends Paradox of progress page 10 "the number of people on the move will remain high or even increase as environmental stresses become more pronounced" Due to the change in environment caused by climate change will change where people choose to live, how they choose to live and therefore the type of education available to them. In New Zealand it might force some families to move to the cities to find a more stable income and lifestyle. Rather than live in rural areas. The type of farming could change and sustanability will be affected.

The climate change has affected the overall weather patterns, seasonal changes and created environmental issues. For example during the heavy rain the price of some vegetables e.g. lettuce was $6.99 for some farmers they lost many crops and the price of vegetables increased due to the shortage.
Other countries which have been affected by climate change due to pollution which then cause environmental changes to the weather and added with earthquakes, tsunami, cyclones, (these countries are still recovering from these disasters) has a long term impact on the quality of education if any in the under resourced schools. The welfare and health of these communities decline due to sanitation and very poor water conditions. The standard of living and economic stress has an impact on other countries, people look to other countries for better life style and living conditions.
The silent chronic threats of air pollution, water shortage and climate change will be more noticeable, which could lead to more clashes amongst communities nationally and internationally. As the world tries to deal with these issues. World populations will shift and as people grow older and live longer it will put a strain on the natural resources which are already trying to cope with climate change.
This causes global challenges and global solutions to be forced on already stressed environmental issues. It has forced according to OECD (Trends Shaping Education 2016 Centre for Educational Research page 14)
"economies to coordinate, cooperate, a new commitment to global governance and multi lateralism."
As travel and globalisation is easier and faster to move around the world, technology is able to connect people further empowering individuals and small groups, not only physically but in other ways e.g. online and via the computer.
Where I work we have a whole range of different cultures and people from different countries and backgrounds who attend. Education has a role to play to provide new skills, bring people together, teach competencies like relating to others, to be able to operate in this new world and times of climate change, literally, physically and figuratively.
The recent developments with the prime minister of USA Donald Trump pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement illustrates the seriousness of climate change, this trend and the issues it creates with regard to politics. And what is really important globally?
I believe it is a humanitarian issue and it is a global one. Climate change is affecting everyone and every living creature.
